I share a brief review I did of the book below, \u201cWhy We Get Fat, and What to Do to Avoid It\u201d by an American author named Gaury Taubes. He is not a doctor or scientist, but a renowned journalist who was born in New York in 1956; he contributes to Science magazine. He studied applied physics at Harvard, aerospace engineering at Stanford and is a journalist at Columbia University. <span lang=\"EN-US\">He is a three-time recipient of the Science in Society Journalism Award from the National Association of Science Writers. <\/span>I would like to point out that he is the only print journalist to receive such recognition. He is a recognized researcher for Health Policy Research at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation at the University of California, San Francisco School of Public Health, and the author of Good Calories, Bad Calories (2007), which we will discuss in another post.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h2>Why We Gain Weight | Why Most Diets Don&#039;t Work<\/h2>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In his questions about why most diets don&#039;t work, Taubes proposes a new look at the results and conclusions of old scientific studies, seeking answers, breaking old paradigms and bringing new possibilities for controlling obesity. He does not advocate the Mediterranean, Paleolithic, Atkins, Dukan or any other diet, but rather the way to control the hormones involved in the weight gain process through a non-inflammatory diet, with a higher content of beneficial fats and proteins, with a low content of &quot;fattening&quot; carbohydrates associated with specific short-interval and high-intensity exercises.<\/div>\n<div>It also highlights that quality is more important than the amount of calories consumed, as well as the more important role that diet plays over the amount of physical exercise in the process of healthy and sustainable weight loss. There are a number of mistaken practices that are currently being adopted based on unconvincing studies that, in reality, make weight loss more difficult, such as counting and restricting calories and increasing the amount of aerobic exercise, in addition to drastically reducing fat consumption. It shows us masterfully and simply that, without a shadow of a doubt, a 200-calorie portion of lettuce will not have the same hormonal impact as 200 calories of condensed milk.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h2>Why we gain weight | How to avoid the yo-yo effect<\/h2>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>To overcome the yo-yo effect of the gain-lose cycle, Gaury Taubes explains the vicious cycle that stimulates weight gain and proposes a change in diet that should become a lifestyle, as it can bring, in addition to weight loss, the sustainability of an ideal weight within a safe margin with a much better quality of life. Making it clear that it is necessary to change our mindset and learn to enjoy foods that are good for us, after detoxifying the body of addictive and fattening substances. She explains that only after a period of abstinence from certain foods will we be able to regain control of the release of hormones that act in the process of weight gain or loss.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Worldwide, obesity is growing at alarming rates, and Brazil is no different, as we have already recorded almost 50% of overweight in our population according to updated statistics. However, the media has been repeating the ideas of some authorities, who are not very up-to-date, on obesity that the current problem is limited to overeating, that is, the excess of food available and the sedentary behavior of modern man. In other words, it would be simple to eradicate the problem as long as, mathematically, we can consume fewer calories and burn more. Take children away from the computer or television and let them play in the street or in the parks.<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><u>These ideas have been perpetuated in our minds for decades, becoming a paradigm that is difficult to overcome, as it seems too logical not to be true.<\/u>! A good portion of people who suffer from the problem of weight gain spend their lives trying to eat less and exercise more, but they are unable to achieve or maintain the desired results, becoming hopeless or suffering from erroneous judgments about their lack of will, discipline or persistence, when in fact, they are feeding the vicious cycle of obesity without knowing it.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h2>\u00a0Why We Get Fat | And the Answer to Obesity<\/h2>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The main<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><u>response<\/u><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>found for obesity, according to Taubes, is based on a metabolic dysfunction where appetite increases due to weight gain, and not the other way around. Because the body needs more energy and ends up producing more insulin as it gains weight, so much so that it will increasingly have an uncontrollable feeling of hunger. And trying to satisfy it will only increase weight gain.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Download the book The Mind Diet \u00a0<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>THE<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><u>solution<\/u>\u00a0would be to eliminate from your daily diet foods that cause a rapid increase in insulin in the body, such as sugar and high glycemic index carbohydrates.<\/div>\n<div>Some weight loss diets work because, when following a calorie-restricted diet, you usually also restrict foods made from refined flours (pasta, pastries, bread), beer, soft drinks and sweets in general. However, when you also reduce beneficial fats and high-value proteins, you start to feel hungry and are unable to stick to the diet, falling into slip-ups with unbridled hunger, eating more carbohydrates and gaining weight again, entering the yo-yo effect with gains that are even greater than the weight you started the diet with. After all, fats and proteins are what make you feel full.
