Some time ago, the Lutz diet became famous thanks to actor Kellan Lutz was promoted. For those who don't know him by that name, they will surely know him as Emmett Cullen, a role he played in the famous love and vampire film saga Twilight. It is a diet in which we try to eliminate as many carbohydrates as possible from our menu.
Kellan was not the creator of this diet as such, but he is one of its advocates, as he has had excellent results. The person in charge of structuring this diet is Dr. Wolfgang Lutz, author of the book “Leben ohne Brot” (Living Without Bread). This book claims that bread and all foods derived from wheat are not clean and harm our body. The reason, according to the book, is that our digestive system is specifically designed to digest meat and fatty foods, that is, we are carnivores.
Lutz Diet – Why Wheat is Bad
If we go to the scientific evidence, we can certainly find certain disadvantages of consuming wheat:
First of all, wheat is essentially a sugar, which means that if we abuse it, we have certain health problems, mainly due to the increase in blood sugar.
Wheat is also one of the biggest sources of gluten found in the food pyramid, a substance to which a large percentage of people are intolerant. Gluten remains in the intestinal walls causing side effects in our digestive system.
There is sufficient evidence to confirm that wheat and foods derived from it have certain levels of opiates, which are as addictive as cigarettes.
Lutz Diet: A No-Carb Diet?
Based on the information contained in the aforementioned book, Lutz's method does not completely eliminate wheat and gluten from your menu, but it also drastically reduces carbohydrate consumption.
We can set up a Lutz diet menu the way we want, we simply have to increase the consumption of proteins and fats, limiting carbohydrates as much as possible.
Breakfast: eliminating bread completely, we can prepare a breakfast with a vegetable omelette prepared with butter.
Lunch: grilled chicken breast with salad.
Dinner: salmon with butter and green salad
This could be a basic menu, however, you can research these carbohydrate-rich foods online and eliminate them from your diet if you are willing to do so.
Lutz Diet – Function of carbohydrates in the body
Carbohydrates are energy molecules. The energy reserves in our body are essential because they stimulate endorphins, hormones responsible for keeping us lucid and relaxed. But, in addition, they have other functions that we can do according to the Lutz diet.
Energetically: If we look at the energy factor alone, we find that carbohydrate molecules are much lighter and faster than fat molecules, which is why our body absorbs them better. The body uses these molecules as glucose and can store them for use at the time of day that requires them.
Saving proteins: the other source of energy in our body would be proteins, if the carbohydrate intake is low, the body will look for the energy needed to complete its basic processes in proteins. That is why the consumption of carbohydrates helps us to save proteins that are more useful for other metabolic functions.
Structural: Carbohydrates in their molecular structure contain certain sugars that are essential for the proper functioning of organs and an effective neuronal response. Therefore, reducing them drastically causes dizziness and failures in essential cognitive abilities, such as memory and attention.
Detoxification: Our body accumulates toxic substances such as bilirubin and many others. These are stored in vital organs, limiting their functioning, and the worst part is that they are not soluble. To eliminate them, they must be combined with glucuronic acid, a derivative of glucose that can be found in carbohydrates.
Lutz Diet – Conclusion
Dr. Lutz is correct in his thesis that we evolved from carnivorous animals. First, our intestines have receptors that can dissolve heme iron, which is only found in meat. Furthermore, we are not able to generate vitamin B12 on our own and our digestive system is too slow to synthesize vitamin A and taurine, so it is more beneficial to obtain these foods from meat.
The word evolution means to advance, the fact that we have tasted carnivorous animals does not mean that we continue to be so, since evolution would be null. Homo sapiens have a much more complex organism than their predecessors and therefore their diet is also more complex. It is not enough to consume only carnivorous fats and proteins, it is also necessary to consume other minerals, vitamins and nutrients that are essential for the proper functioning of the entire body.
