Low Carb Diet Foods, you changed to a low carb diet, but still haven’t lost weight? A low-carb diet is a diet that requires a person to restrict carbohydrates and increase quality protein, healthy fats, and healthy non-starchy vegetables. Even though you may think you’re doing it right, there may be a few things preventing you from losing that weight.
Let's take a look at the possible reasons why this is happening:
Low carb diet foods | Lots of carbs
- You’re eating or drinking too many carbs. The low-carb diet is all about restricting carbs. However, there may be times when you lose track and allow those sneaky carbs to creep back into your diet. Remember, carbs can quickly add up! To help you stay on track and find your weight loss “sweet spot,” start recording everything you eat and drink. You need to be completely honest and even log the little snacks you steal from your kids’ unfinished meals.
Low carb diet foods | Lots of fruits
- You're eating too much fruit. While fruit may be healthier than processed sugary treats, having too much will be hindering your weight loss. The sugar and fructose in fruit may be too much for your weight loss goals, so only eat it as an occasional treat. If you're overweight, fruit is not your friend.
Low carb diet foods | Dairy products
- You’re drinking too much dairy. If you love your milky lattes, then start looking at how many you’re drinking, as this could be holding you back from losing weight. While milk is great for its protein and calcium, it also has about 5% of carbs. Not losing weight? Start cutting back on cheese, cream, milk, yogurt, and other dairy products until you start to see a steady increase in weight loss, then slowly reintroduce them once you’re at your goal weight.
Low carb diet foods | Oilseeds
- You’re eating too many nuts. Do you like to snack on nuts? Walnuts are great for fiber, omega-3s, trace minerals, and selenium. However, they also contain carbs that can add up quickly; cashews are the worst with almost 20%. Stop eating nuts before weight loss starts again. To control your nut cravings, buy them in their shells, so it takes longer to eat and will last longer.

Low carb diet foods | Sweeteners
- You have too many artificial sweeteners in your diet. Having diet drinks to help you lose weight if you’re having sugar cravings is a good thing, but you should eventually give them up if you want to make progress. Likewise, when using artificial sweeteners instead of regular sugar when baking or making desserts, you should learn not to let these low-carb treats be a big part of your menu. If you can skip them, skip them!
Low carb diet foods | Excess coffee
- You’re drinking too much caffeine. While caffeine is great in that it wakes you up by increasing your adrenaline, it also stimulates your liver to release glucose from its glycogen stores. When you have high levels of glucose in your body, insulin is released again, fat is stored, and fat burning stops. If you really need a cup of coffee to start your day, opt for a decaf drink.
Low carb diet foods | Lack of sleep
- You’re sleep deprived. Lack of sleep and increased stress levels affect your diet. Try practicing relaxation methods to calm yourself down and cut back on coffee!
Low carb diet foods | Fat
- You don't have enough fat in your diet. Contrary to what most people say, you actually need to eat more healthy fats if you want to lose weight. Consuming fat helps you lose your appetite, so don't be afraid of fat!
Low carb diet foods | How have your meals been?
- You’re either eating too much or too little. Popular weight loss advice is to eat small, frequent meals throughout the day. But you should only eat when you’re truly hungry—not because your schedule tells you to. It’s good to know what real hunger feels like and fuel yourself with something nutritious. The other end of the spectrum is eating too little; to the point where you feel like you’re starving. This only leads to an unhealthy type of craving and hunger that will drive you to reach for a sweet treat. Remember that cravings are a sign of insulin resistance, so learn to listen to your body.
Low carb diet foods | Conclusion
- Just be patient! Sometimes, even if you are doing everything right and super strict with your diet, you still don’t lose weight. A hard lesson to learn is to be patient and keep going! Tell yourself that your new lifestyle will be much more nutritious and that the weight will come off, that you will be able to control your appetite and that you will succeed. You may have insulin resistance that will take some time to correct. For some it takes weeks, others it takes months, but you will get there.
Avoid fake foods! Throw those low-carb bars, sugar-free chocolate snacks, low-carb breads, and so on in the trash. These are not real foods and are not good for you.
